If you have kids and know how they make all sorts of requests, then you\u2019ll also know the favorite parental answer: \u201cMaybe; we\u2019ll see.\u201d When one of our sons was four and received this reply, he said to my wife, \u201cJust say, \u2018Yes,\u2019 mom\u2014that\u2019s much better.\u201d<\/p>

Yet saying \u201cNo,\u201d often feels like better parenting. I find myself occupied with protecting my kids from whatever might harm them. We\u2019re vigilant because the dangers are real: the risks of social media, online pornography, politically-correct indoctrination, bad friends, etc. We don\u2019t want our kids to be hurt physically, spiritually, or emotionally. So we teach our children what (and why and how) to say \u201cNo\u201d to ungodly worldviews, actions, and temptations.<\/p>

Yet the impulse to say \u201cNo\u201d\u2014to keep distance between those we love and the sin God hates, must be joined by the impulse to say \u201cYes\u201d\u2014to keep together what God loves and sin separates.<\/strong> Ever since the fall, sin has created division. Like a wedge, it has put distance between God and humanity, between humans and the natural order, and between human beings themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

LESSONS FROM ISAIAH<\/span><\/h3>

Yet through Christ, God is restoring all that sin ruined. He\u2019s uniting in Christ what sin divided. That\u2019s not only the message of the New Testament. It\u2019s also a lesson we find in the prophecy of Isaiah.<\/p>

The book of Isaiah is packed with prophecies about Jesus the Messiah. Some examples, especially familiar at Christmastime, include\u00a0Isaiah 7:14<\/a>;\u00a09:6<\/a>;\u00a011:1\u20132<\/a>;\u00a025:8<\/a>;\u00a040:2\u20135<\/a>,11<\/a>;\u00a053:1\u20136<\/a>. I hope you\u2019ll take time to discuss some of them with your family this Advent season. As you read, notice what Isaiah\u2019s prophesies are doing, uniting what we might tend to keep apart.<\/p>

1. Connecting the spiritual and the physical.<\/h4>

Isaiah\u2019s prophesies speak of virgins, infants, trees, and fruit, wolves, lions, roads, and roots, mountains, valleys, flocks, and shepherds. God is at work in the real world. Sometimes our Bible lessons might seem like God is only interested in character qualities or spiritual truths, but he came to Earth as a real human with hunger pains, tear ducts, sweat glands, and blood vessels\u2014to save real humanity.<\/p>

If we talk to our kids as if God and Jesus and the Bible are good for the invisible world\u2014for the heavenly realm\u2014but not for real life, then we\u2019re not only miscommunicating God\u2019s Word, we may also be communicating that what God says is not real. Instead, let\u2019s help our children see that God\u2019s Word describes the real world.<\/p>

2. Connecting the Old Testament prophecies to the coming Messiah.<\/h4>

When the New Testament authors quote the Old Testament, they cite it as the very Word of God. It\u2019s not just that God said something (in the past tense), but that He continues to speak through those ancient Scriptures (in the present tense) today.\u00a0<\/p>

For example, Matthew writes that Isaiah \u201csays\u201d (Matthew 13:14<\/a>\u00a0citing\u00a0Isaiah 6:9<\/a>); Luke writes that the prophet Isaiah \u201csays\u201d (Acts 7:48\u201349<\/a>\u00a0citing\u00a0Isaiah 66:1\u20132<\/a>), and Paul writes that Isaiah \u201csays\u201d (Romans 10:11<\/a>\u00a0citing\u00a0Isaiah 28:16<\/a>). When we read Isaiah to our families, we hear him pointing to the Messiah. And we hear God speaking to us today.<\/p>

As such, the Bible has never mainly been a book that we examine. Instead, it\u2019s always been a book that examines us. So as you read Isaiah to your family, remind them that all of God\u2019s Word, both Old and New Testaments, speaks to us today with God\u2019s own authority.<\/p>

3. Connecting actions and accountability.<\/h4>

Some of Isaiah\u2019s most striking prophecies contain stunning metaphors of judgment. A stubborn donkey refusing to obey (1:2\u20133<\/a>); the stench of rotten fruit (5:1\u20132<\/a>); a tree stripped of its fruit (17:6<\/a>); a swimmer attempting a run away from God (25:11<\/a>). Isaiah paints dark and terrible pictures of the person who rebels against God. If the sinner does not turn back, he will face judgment, the kind that is as terrible as it is unavoidable.<\/p>

There\u2019s an unbreakable connection, then, that exists between the responsibility of human actions and the justice of God\u2019s response. If somehow we paper over this live wire, we neglect to serve the next generation well. Yet even this does not cover the breadth of his plan.<\/p>

4. Connecting weakness with strength, freedom with forgiveness.<\/h4>

Isaiah\u2019s prophesies startle us not just in their statements of judgment but in their promises of mercy. Who among us would ever have created a hero who is also weak and unattractive, disfigured and despised (52:14\u201353:3<\/a>)? Yet this is the One who saves the day\u2014a baby, not a warrior (7:14<\/a>), a tiny shoot out of the dry ground (11:1\u20132<\/a>;\u00a053:2<\/a>). Our human nature wants the mighty and majestic to win. That\u2019s why we feel good about ourselves on our good days, and bad on our bad days. We traffic in the currency of what we feel we\u2019ve earned.<\/p>

Yet the one who came in weakness and misery meets us where we actually are. We don\u2019t have to become strong to meet the Strong One; and we don\u2019t have to become attractive to access the Beautiful One. He meets us and forgives us not because of who we are or what we deserve. Therefore, his forgiveness is completely free\u2014wine and milk without money and without cost (55:1<\/a>).<\/p>

So let\u2019s keep together what God has put together. Let\u2019s help the next generation take in the vastness of God\u2019s work and Word\u2014a plan that spans spiritual and physical, old and new, encompassing both justice and mercy.<\/p>

As we read the ancient prophecies of Isaiah this holiday season, let\u2019s help our children hear God\u2019s own voice of authority and love. A voice that always says \u201cYes and Amen\u201d in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20<\/a>).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
