But I have learned that is not how repentance works and it\u2019s certainly not how we experience spiritual growth.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spiritual transformation happens when we embrace repentance as a way of life. This means identifying the deep lies that drive our sinful behaviour. This changes our thinking (<\/span><b>the trunk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which transforms our behaviour (<\/span><b>the fruit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my first post I mentioned believing the lie that my friends\u2019 attention would give me value and happiness. That is the lie I turned from. But what does it look like for me to go have my roots planted in the Gospel, rather than a lie?<\/span><\/p><p><b><i>The Root<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the root now representing the truth of the Gospel, I need to ask: \u201cWho is Jesus to me?\u201d \u201cWhat part of the Gospel do I need to re-believe? \u201dWhat did Jesus do for me to make my fear baseless?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><i>The Trunk<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trunk represents my new thoughts in light of the truth. \u201cWho am I now because of Jesus?\u201d \u201cWhat does God think of me because of Jesus?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><i>The Fruit<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fruit is the outcome of the Spirit applying the salve of the Gospel on my heart. \u201cWhat am I feeling now?\u201d \u201cWhat are my thoughts toward God? Toward others?\u201d \u201cWhat is God asking me to do as a result of what He did for me?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s see it in action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am reminded that the God of the cosmos chose me (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) before the foundation of the world to know Him. Knowing God is possible because Jesus was willing to be forsaken by all\u2014including God\u2014so I could become His friend. And not only a friend, but His child!\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can I help but be overwhelmed by what Jesus did for me, by the Father\u2019s love in initiating it, and by the Spirit\u2019s presence which unites me to Jesus. What more attention do I need if the God of the cosmos<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chose me and knows me?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is a freedom from others\u2019 approval and a desire to have all attention directed to the amazingness of who Jesus is and what He does for us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4><span style=\"color: #22b577;\"><b>Two caveats\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, for the fruit to root\u2013root to fruit exercise to be helpful, we need to grasp the good news of Jesus as revealed in the Bible. This is why reading scripture and comprehending basic theology is so important. You can\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the truth if you don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the truth.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, the fruit of Gospel truth grows in the soil of belief; the sinful fruit of our lies grows in the soil of unbelief. This is why one of my go-to prayers is that of the dad with the sick boy, \u201cI believe! Help me overcome my unbelief!\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark+9%3A24&amp;version=NIV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark 9:24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p><p><b>Feeling bad for what you have done will not help you grow spiritually;
