As Eric stared at the floor, he recounted his awful choice. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We prayed together. Eric, repenting for saying yes to the all-too-familiar sin; me praying for this young man to have strength to remain faithful. I encouraged Eric, assuring him of the forgiveness found in Jesus\u2019 finished work. Had I truly understood the nature of repentance at the time, I could have better helped Eric.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4><span style=\"color: #22b577;\">A change of mind<\/span><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Greek word for repentance, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metanoia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think differently afterward. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is used over 30 times in scripture to stress a change of mind or purpose. <\/span><b>While repentance can lead to changed behaviour, deep repentance <i>always <\/i>starts with a changed mind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do this by identifying the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">untruth <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the root of our behaviour. When you identify the lie you choose to believe, you can repent (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metanoia) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and think differently. You turn from your lie to the truth. Your thinking changes, and when that happens, your motivation changes and that changes behaviour.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare that with focusing on repenting from bad behaviour which makes repenting an occasional trigger we pull when we cross the line. We believe the more sincere we are in our remorse, the more likely the repentance will stick, but if honest, we know that sort of repentance has a short shelf life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>When we identify and turn from wrong thinking, repentance is a practice we must nurture daily to see lasting change. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is what Martin Luther meant when he wrote \u201cthe entire life of a believer should be one of repentance.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-875ca86 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"875ca86\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6689a06\" data-id=\"6689a06\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2dbdc59 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2dbdc59\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"color: #22b577;\">Fruit to root<\/span><\/h4><p>Here is what I wished I had said to Eric that day in the quietness of my office.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cEric, I want to show you a helpful tool to pursue repentance throughout life. Remember this saying,\u201d I instructed. \u201c<i>Fruit to root.\u00a0<\/i>Here\u2019s how it works. Think of a tree: the fruit, the trunk, the roots. Ask: \u201cWhat was the situation?\u201d \u201cHow did it happen?\u201d \u201cHow did I respond?\u201d\u00a0<\/p><h4><strong><i>The Trunk<\/i><\/strong><\/h4><p>The trunk represents your thoughts\u00a0<i>before\u00a0<\/i>you acted. Ask: \u201cWhat thoughts crossed my mind when I did that?\u201d \u201cWhat did I feel when I said that?\u201d By reflecting on the thoughts and feelings that led to your sinful behaviour, you will gain insight to help identify the root.\u00a0<\/p><h4><strong><i>The Root<\/i><\/strong><\/h4><p>Jesus said that where your treasure is, there will be your heart also. What you treasure in your heart determines your thoughts. The tree root represents your desires and motives. Ask: \u201cWhat did I want at that moment?\u201d \u201cWhat did I hope would happen?\u201d \u201cWhat did I fear at that time?\u201d<\/p><h4><span style=\"color: #22b577;\">Going deeper<\/span><\/h4><p>Recently, I was with some friends and during our conversation we spoke about a mutual acquaintance. Later that day the Spirit convicted me of what I had said. It wasn\u2019t mean-spirited, but it was at this person\u2019s expense. Were I to focus on my behaviour I would repent from gossip and promise God I would do better next time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>But let\u2019s do deeper. Right before I gossiped I thought, \u201cIt would be funny if I said\u2026\u201d I was feeling left out of the conversation because I didn\u2019t know this person well. Let\u2019s keep going deeper.<\/p><p>At that moment I hoped to have the attention brought back to me. I wanted my friends to notice me; saying something funny, even though it was gossip, seemed to be the best way to achieve that. At the root of my gossip was a lie I had embraced, that my friends\u2019 opinion\u00a0<i>of me<\/i>\u00a0and the attention\u00a0<i>on me<\/i>\u00a0would bring a sense of value and happiness\u00a0<i>to me<\/i>.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s not pretty, but sin never is.\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Our lies are as varied as our personalities and circumstances, but every sin is a low-hanging fruit of a deep lie we believe.\u00a0<\/b>They are the lies we need to repent of. That is the face of deep repentance.\u00a0<\/p><p>But what follows? If we turn our backs on the lie, what should we turn to?
