You\u2019ll find it in 200 verses in the New Testament alone. Love is a common theme throughout the Bible. So which verse would you choose to define God\u2019s love at Christmas? You might pick John 3:16. I\u2019m thinking about the other \u201c3:16,\u201d 1 John 3:16.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThis is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Our thoughts here likely go straight to the crucifixion, but let\u2019s look closer. The verse says \u201cJesus Christ laid down his life for us.\u201d\u00a0 But <\/span>when <\/span><\/i>did He begin to lay down his life?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It began when \u2018the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us\u201d (John 1:14). Later, the apostle Paul tells us that God \u201cmade himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness\u201d (Philippians 2:7).<\/span><\/p>

We don\u2019t know much about Jesus\u2019 early years. We know He was dedicated in the temple as a baby (Luke 2:21-40). And we know that his parents found Him teaching in the temple, when He was just 12 years old (Luke 2: 41-52).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Other than that, the Bible says little of those first years of Jesus\u2019 life, so we don\u2019t ponder them as often. But just think, for 12 years, He was Emmanuel in the body of a child.<\/strong> Jesus not only lived in a body of flesh, but grew up over decades in that body before completing His mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As we sing He \u201c…lay down his sweet head,\u201d remember that for the first couple of years, the Creator who spoke the world into existence, couldn’t speak a word! He was confined to babbles, coos, and giggles. Now that is laying down your life!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I love Stephen Curtis Chapman\u2019s Christmas song \u201cThis Baby.\u201d Here are the lyrics to first verse:<\/span><\/p>

Well, He cried when He was hungry,
<\/span>Did all the things that babies do;
<\/span>He rocked and He napped on His mother’s lap,
<\/span>And He wiggled and giggled and cooed.
<\/span>There were the cheers when He took His first step,
<\/span>And the tears when He got His first teeth;
<\/span>Almost everything about this little baby
<\/span>Seemed as natural as it could be.<\/span><\/em><\/p>

How will you respond to this act of love?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>

Certainly Jesus’ own words give us some direction, that we are \u201c…to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters\u201d (1 John 3:16).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But what does that look like? It goes beyond a willingness to die for another. Paul exhorts us in Phillipians 2:2-4 to have \u201cthe same love [as Jesus], … in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Let’s lay down our lives and our interests, for all of those around us, reflecting the love of a Saviour who laid down His life in the most humbling way.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
